various illuminations (of a crazy world)

Maira Kalman is one of my art heroes. I first discovered her world of wit and color in the children's section at Borders. An avid reader and collector of children's books, I was in completely blown away by Ooh, La, La, Max in Love. The story was smart and silly. The illustrations were loose and bold. Even the copyright page was dressed to the nines in humor and playfulness. I was hooked.

I have since followed her career, delighting in every new children's book, drooling over her collaborations with fashion and textile designers, and devouring her essays and other works. In my book, Maira Kalman can do no wrong.

When Rama and I found out about a traveling retrospective exhibit of her work, Various Illuminations (of a Crazy World), we made a pilgrimage to San Francisco just to see it. A few friends joined us, and we were all in awe at the gorgeous display of her art and collected objects. We agreed that it was her courage and playfulness that truly inspired us.

Well, LA friends, you are in luck! You can now see Various Illuminations at the Skirball Cultural Center (and you have until Feb. 11 to head over there). For those unable to view the show in person, you can still share in her magic in the exhibition catalog.

I am so happy to read this. This is the kind of selective information that needs to be given and not the random misinformation that is at the other blogs. Thank you for this breathtaking site.

Oh how I adore Maira! I'm an American who recently relocated to Australia and am so excited to share "The Principles of Uncertainty" with my sister-in-law's Australian family. Her work is so inspiring. I love that you can laugh in one breath and tear up in the other. She's a genius. I'm so jealous you got to see some of her work in person! I can only imagine the beauty. Thanks for sharing your love of her with us.
